Visiting Finland

Traineeship abroad at UPM Raflatac.

Melsungen, July 7, 2017

In June, our trainee Kristina Kratz visited Finland. She spent two weeks at our supplier UPM Raflatac as part of her Erasmus + program. UPM Raflatac is one of the leading manufacturers of self-adhesive laminates produced in ten sites across the world. Last year, the company which employs 3,000 people generated sales of 1.4 billion euros.

"During my stay, I worked with Noora Markkanen and Bob Taylor from UPM Raflatac. Among other things, we attended various internal meetings”, says Kristina. In that time, the soon-to-be industrial management assistant was particularly involved in topics such as responsible procurement, forest certification system and supplier questionnaires.

Visiting a forest area near Hämeenlinna in the second week was a very special experience for her. The mother company UPM Kymmene Oyj is the largest private forest owner in Finland. The purpose of her visit was to get familiar with the system of sustainable forestry. Then she made various product comparisons with UPM Raflatac's Label Life tool, which is based on scientific method called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), to compare the CO2, water and energy consumption. Kristina will also be presenting her results at Faubel. "During the two weeks I spent there, I gained such valuable insight into the business. If you get the opportunity to do an internship, just take it!"
